Maybe it’s my open face demeanor or my ability to blend in. Whatever it is I either look like a local or simply like I know the answers to questions. I HAVE spent most of my career providing answers to people so maybe that’s it?
It always amuses me when I’m visiting a new city, strolling around taking in the sites and I’m approached with ‘can you tell me where XYZ is?’
This happened three times while in Montreal. The first time, my friend Amy and I were trying to figure out where WE were on one of those big city street maps when a guy asked our help in finding a street he needed to be on. The second time, I was asked were the passport office was (I happended to see the sign in the building so was able to direct them). And my last night there, a passenger in a car asked if ‘this is the way to ….’ I didn’t catch the rest and just shrugged apologetically.
I’ve been asked directions in Washington DC and New York City and asked where the Tube was in London.
About the only place I haven’t been asked directions or for help is when I have been in Asia. I guess I don’t look like I’m from there.
Whatever the reason that people approach me with questions, I’m always glad to help out when I can. And I’ll continue to stroll along and attempt to blend in.
